Except, contrary to the P8 Lite (2017), this time, the Watch 2 (2018) is… basically the same device as its predecessor. Well, not exactly the same, but nearly.
At the end of May 2018, in China, Huawei officialised its updated version of the Watch 2. On the outside, most of the watch is the same as the 2017 version, with the exact same dimensions and the same weight. Only the band has been slightly modified.
Specs-wise, nothing has changed. The screen is still 1.2 inches, with a resolution of 390×390 pixels. The AMOLED display is protected by Gorilla Glass from Corning, and the watch is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 clocked at 1.1 GHz, using Android Wear OS 2.0. This chip is coupled to 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage, a 420 mAh battery and the usual options of Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and IP68. The usual sensors are onboard too (gyro, heart rate, compass, etc).
The only real notable difference is the LTE option, with the 2017 model needing a nano-SIM card, while the 2018 model is available with two options: with a nano-SIM, and with an e-SIM. In short, the only new thing is the e-SIM capability. The new watch is priced at around 300 euros.
Those who own the 2017 model of the Huawei Watch 2 may be disappointed, as this is not the update they were expecting, and there’s no point in upgrading to this new version. For those looking for a smartwatch, this… “updated” version could be interesting.
Huawei did confirm they are working on a Watch 3, but, according to Richard Yu, it will be released when it is ready.
