Huawei Mate 20 rumours: in-screen fingerprint sensor and price tag of over a thousand euros

We’ve managed to obtain some information concerning the future Mate 20 series, such as some precisions concerning the device or the price tag.

According to some credible sources, there will be three Mates. The Mate 20 Lite, the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. This wouldn’t be surprising, as Huawei did the same with the Mate 10 series and the P20 series. But with the P10 series, there was also a P10 Lite, P10 and P10… Plus.

From what we’ve heard, the Mate 20 Pro, the flagship to be released in November, should feature an in-screen fingerprint sensor, just like the Mate RS, and will cost… over a thousand euros. This isn’t too surprising, with the P20 Pro costing 899 euros. Lately, flagships from certain brands have been costing more and more, with the Samsung S9+ costing 950 euros, the iPhone X from Apple being priced at 1 200 euros and Oppo’s Find X costing 999 euros. We don’t have a more precise price than “over but around a thousand euros”. We are thinking this could be 1 049 euros, seeing the 100 euros increase between the Mate 10 Pro and the P20 Pro, making this a 150 euros increase.

The Mate 20 Pro should feature a triple-lens camera too, as it would make little sense for Huawei to not use one of their most successful features of the P20 Pro, giving them an edge on the photography side. What still remains unknown is whether the Mate 20 Pro camera will be triple-lens, and if it will be the same as the one currently used on the P20 Pro, or if it will be an improved version. For the positioning, the camera will probably be centred, just like with the Mate 9, Mate 10 and Mate RS.

The rest of the spec sheet is more or less known or can be easily guessed. The display should be 6.9 inches without notch, a Kirin 980, scoring 30% more points on benchmarks than the Snapdragon 845 from Qualcomm, an updated NPU and Bluetooth 5.0 (finally!). Honor, Huawei’s sub brand, recently announced a new device, the Honor 10 GT, coming with 8 GB of RAM. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Mate 20 Pro also features 8 GB of RAM, coupled with 128 GB of internal storage, though some new flagships are now featuring 256 GB of internal storage as base storage. But it seems more likely Huawei will only introduce 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of internal storage with the next P series in 2019.

Here’s our current guessed spec list, which we will be updating as new information is revealed and/or confirmed:

-Announcing October 2018, Launching November 2018
