Together with the new MateBook 13 (2020), Huawei Mobile France is also bringing the latest generation of their successful MateBook D’s, the MateBook D 14 (2020) and the MateBook D 15 (2020), which were announced back in February, at the cancelled Mobile World Congress 2020.
Starting with the MateBook D 14 (2020), this time Huawei has decided to offer models using AMD’s mobile processors, which have become good enough to compete against their Intel counterparts. The MateBook D 14 (2020) is available in two different variants, with the cheapest coming with a Ryzen 5 3500U, packing 4 cores and 8 threads, with a base clock of 2.1GHz and a max boost clock of up to 3.7GHz, and with Radeon Vega 8 graphics. Meanwhile, the more expensive variant comes with a Ryzen 7 3700U, which also has 4 cores and 8 threads, but with a base clock of 2.3GHz and a max boost clock of up to 4.0GHz, and Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics. However, while the R5 version is available in two variants, one with 8GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage space, using an SSD in both cases, the R7 version is only available with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, and still being an SSD.
The MateBook D 14 (2020) comes, as its name implies, with a 14” inches display, with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, and a screen-to-body ratio of 84%. While previous models had the webcam on the screen, this time, we find it under its own key on the keyboard, just as on the more expensive MateBook X Pro. Another feature borrowed from the MateBook X Pro is the fingerprint reader on the power button, making it easy to both power on and unlock the laptop.
Other features of this new laptop are its relatively low weight, at around 1.4Kg, and a thickness of 15.9 millimetres, making it easy to put in a backpack and carry around. The manufacturer has also improved the cooling with their Shark Fin 2.0 fan design, being more effective at keeping the laptop cool while remaining as silent as possible. Charging-wise, thanks to the 65W wired charging, it is possible to charge nearly half the battery in half an hour, going from 1% to 46% in 30 minutes. The brand also claims that the 56 Wh battery is enough for watching 1080P videos for up to 9.5 hours.
The MateBook D 14 (2020) is, as mentioned, available in three different variants, with the following pricing and promotions:
- MateBook D 14 with Ryzen 5, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage: 699.99€, with a 100€ discount coupon, dropping the price down to 599.99€.
- MateBook D 14 with Ryzen 5, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage: 749.99€, with a 12% discount code, dropping the price down to 659.99€.
- MateBook D 14 with Ryzen 7, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage: 849.99€, with a 100€ discount coupon, dropping the price down to 749.99€, on top of being able to choose between a Watch GT or the FreeBuds 3, which are included in the price. For the Watch GT, this one is only available in black, while for the FreeBuds 3, customers can choose between black, white and red.
Moving on to the bigger MateBook D 15 (2020), this one comes with a 15.6” display with a 1080P resolution, although the screen-to-body ratio is of 87%. Here too, the webcam has been moved to the keyboard, and we also find a fingerprint reader integrated to the power button. The only version available right now in France comes with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U, same as in the MateBook D 14 (2020), with Radeon Vega 8 graphics and 8GB of RAM. Storage-wise, Huawei has settled for a 256GB SSD.
Battery-wise, and despite the bigger size of the laptop, we find a 42 Wh battery, with 65W wired charging, doing 1% to 53% in 30 minutes. Lastly, both the MateBook D 14 & 15 (2020) feature the usual Huawei Share options, such as screen sharing between a compatible Huawei smartphone and the laptop.
The MateBook D 15 (2020) sold in France is only available in its 8GB+256GB variant, costing usually 699.99€ but with a temporary 50€ discount, bringing the price down to 649.99€. Furthermore, with the promotional code, users can save a further 12% more, which, if we are not mistaken, should bring the overall price down to 571.99€. Overall, the MateBook D 15 (2020) available in France is quite disappointing, especially if compared to the MateBook D 14 (2020) and its various promotions, such as either the FreeBuds 3 or the Watch GT, on top of the 100€ discount.
