In November 2019, Huawei launched a new high-end tablet, the MatePad Pro, coming with a 10.8” display and powered by the Kirin 990. This tablet was then announced globally a few months after at the cancelled Mobile World Congress 2020, at the end of February, with the company showcasing both the regular Kirin 990 version and the 5G variant powered by the Kirin 990 5G. Initially expected to launch in April of this year, it appears the device will end up coming out next month, in May, with the pre-order page on Huawei’s official UK store already up.
Customers interested are first greeted with the usual Huawei warning that this product doesn’t come with the Google Play Store or Google Mobile Services, and instead comes with Huawei’s AppGallery and Huawei Mobile Services. Once this warning acknowledged, users can proceed and check out the product and, of course, if interested, purchase it.
The only version sold in the UK by Huawei, at least for now, is the regular Wi-Fi version, powered by the Kirin 990, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Colours-wise, only one is available, being Midnight Grey. Other features of this tablet are its compact size, with a 10.8” LCD display with thin bezels, a punch-hole front camera of 8MP and a total weight of some 460 grams. On the back, we find a single 13MP camera, as well as a noise cancellation microphone.
Battery-wise, the MatePad Pro comes with a large 7250mAh battery, which can be charged with Huawei’s 40W SuperCharge, the same found on the P30 Pro or Mate 30 Pro, and supports 15W wireless charging, making of this the first tablet on the market supporting not only wireless charging, but also reverse wireless charging, at 7.5W.
Software-wise, the device comes with EMUI10.0.1 out of the box, with various optimizations to make full use of the large display, such as multi-screen collaboration, also seen on Huawei’s MateBooks, allowing to connect a smartphone to the device and easily drag and drop files, manage the phone from the tablet, etc. We also have the multi-window mode, same as on the Mate Xs, which divides the screen in two and allows for two applications to run simultaneously, and even have a third app open floating. We also find App Multiplier, a new feature that allows to display a specific part of an app while seeing it in full on a separate window. This being a tablet which will likely be used to watch movies and such, we find a quad-speaker set-up with Huawei Histen 6.0 3D stereo and tuned by Harman Kardon.
In the UK, those deciding to pre-order the MatePad Pro between the 15th and the 28th of April 2020 will be getting, for free, the Huawei M-Pen and the MatePad Keyboard, costing 99.99£ and 129.99£ respectively, or 229.98£ in total. With the tablet costing 499.99£, these two gifts make up for nearly half of the price of the device, with both being useful to increase productivity and make the most out of the MatePad Pro. For instance, the M-Pen can be used for drawing, while the keyboard can be used to work/edit documents or comfortably browse the web.
The MatePad Pro will start shipping on the 8th of May 2020, next month, with shipping being free inside of the UK.
