Iran’s nuclear deal is the result of 12 years of negotiations between Iran, the US, various European countries and the EU, with an agreement reached in July 2015.

As a reminder, this agreement meant a reduction in Iran’s capacity of enriching uranium, a reduction of its already existing stock of low-enriched uranium, the conversion into a research centre of one of its enrichment plants, as well as only being allowed to produce uranium for civil uses. In exchange, the economic sanctions would be lifted, once the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Iran was following these guidelines.

Vice-President Federica Mogherini pointed out that this agreement was not a bilateral agreement, and thus a single country can’t decide to terminate it.

During Trump’s speech on Friday, he mentioned how Iran had violated the agreement and that he would pass it to the United States’ Congress, even though the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had verified 8 times that Iran is implementing the nuclear deal properly.

The Iranian government has expressed concern over Trump’s words, while neighbouring countries such as Israel have expressed their content with the current situation.

Locals in Iran fear of new economic sanctions from the US, at a time where the country is slowly recovering from the last sanctions and see some potential investors consider establishing in their country.
